Chemical demonstration of a direct synthesis of ammonium chloride.

Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Chemical demonstration of a direct synthesis of ammonium chloride. Concentrated ammonia and hydrochloric acid solutions are added to two gas-washing bottles, respectively. Using rubber pumps, air (acting as gas-carrier) is injected in the gas-washing tubes causing the streams of gasses (air with ammonia i.e. air with hydrogen chloride) to collide giving solid product (ammonium chloride, NH4Cl). The chemical equation is:
HCl(g) + NH3(g) = NH4Cl(s).

The dispersion is so high that smoke is observed (smoke is a gas–solid disperse system).

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
